Pilgrimages have deep roots around the Mariazell Railway area. This 84 km route was specially built for pilgrims heading to Mariazell. Even today, many folks love the idea of relaxing on the Mariazellerbahn for the trip back home after a tiring walk.

For those wanting an easier journey, the Mariazellerbahn covers specific sections, especially great for leisurely or tired pilgrims. The well-known Via Sacra runs alongside the route, and some train stations are conveniently close to the pilgrimage path.


Take a ride through Dirndltal (Dirndl Valley) into Mariazellerland with the Stairs of Heaven (Himmelstreppe). This ultra comfy, eco-friendly train, which runs daily from St.Pölten to Mariazell and back has got it all: air conditioning, roomy entrances, easy access for everyone, and a cool passenger info system.
